Our Sustainability Commitment

Our pledge for a
sustainable future

We appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction and believe that reducing harm to our planet is the greatest challenge we face. We acknowledge that we have businesses that are harmful to the environment, however we believe that under our custodianship we can improve their sustainability more quickly and to a greater effect, and at the same time influence others to follow.

We pledge to use the resources we have – our businesses, our investments, our voice and our imagination – to lead by example.

Our guiding principles

  • Reduce our environmental and social impact
  • Balance decisions with an understanding of their environmental and social impact
  • Collaborate with our customers, suppliers, competitors and other key stakeholders to reduce their environmental and social impact
  • Reduce health and safety risks
  • Support our communities to survive and thrive
  • Act with integrity by respecting people and human rights
  • Report transparently and honestly
We are committed to achieving net zero in scope 1 and 2 operations by 2030, 20 years ahead of Government targets. Our Impact Report highlights our ongoing efforts to prioritise long-term growth alongside social and environmental responsibility.

Our achievements so far

  • Reduced our scope 1 & 2 CO2e emissions by over 40% versus our baseline
  • Pioneered the use of HVO biofuel in 100% of our crane fleet and production machinery
  • Installed over 920 individual solar panels across our businesses since 2021
  • Switched to an rPET based resin at our FRP business made from recycled plastic bottles, reducing supply chain emissions by 40%, saving over 1,000,000 plastic bottles from landfill each year

Work in progress

  • Exploring how to fundamentally embed nature into our strategy
  • Progressing scope 3 benchmarking across all group businesses
  • Working with our suppliers and wider industries on their own sustainability journey to reduce their impact
  • Implementing a third-party accreditation scheme that validates and verifies sustainability claims

Our commitment to sustainability is not just a goal, but a fundamental principle that will guide our actions and shape the future of the Milbank Group.

“As Head of Sustainability, my role is to empower our people to consider nature in everything we do. And, whilst the challenges are enormous, as are the opportunities. Embedding sustainability and innovation into every aspect of our thinking requires honesty, humility and most of all, patience. I believe we are uniquely positioned to have an outsized positive impact on the many industries in which we interact – for the benefit of us all and the future of humanity.”
